Caption: Ear anatomy. Illustration of the anatomy of the human ear, superimposed on a face. Sound waves are collected by the outer ear pinna and pass down the auditory canal to strike the eardrum (green). Vib- rations are then transmitted via the three tiny bones (malleus, incus and stapes - yellow) of the middle ear to the fluid-filled structures of the inner ear (blue). The coils of the semi-circular canals detect balance and body orientation, while the spiral-shaped cochlea detects sound. Nerves (far right) transmit signals from the inner ear to the brain.
