Caption: Inner ear structures. Computer graphic showing the semi-circular canals and cochlear of the inner ear. These tiny structures, magnified here, are found within bones of the skull. Three coils of the semi-circular canals are at left (partly dissected), with the spiral-shaped cochlear (lower centre). Semi-circular canals detect balance and body orientation. The fluid-filled cochlear is involved in sound detection. Sound waves pass down the ear canal, through the middle ear, into the cochlear. Tiny hair cells in the cochlear detect sound vibrations; it is these vibrations which activate the auditory nerve (far right) which is connected to the brain.
