Caption: Ear structure. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the skull, showing the structure of the ear. The ear canal can be seen (white, centre left) leading from the external ear, or pinna. It leads to the eardrum (darker grey, centre), which is connected to the ossicles, or bones of the middle ear (highlighted). These transmit the vibrations of the eardrum to the cochlea, which converts the sound into nerve impulses, and transmits them to the brain. The large white areas are the bones of the skull, and at upper right is part of the nasal sinuses (black).
