Caption: Mouth and throat. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a human head through the mouth and throat. This scan shows a horizontal slice through the head at the level of the upper jaw. Bones appear blue and include the upper jaw (horseshoe shaped) and spine (centre). The black area in the centre is the oropharynx, or throat. The thin flaps on either side are the outer ears. CT scans are made from multiple X-rays combined together on computer and "sliced" at any chosen angle.
