Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Clover tongue roll. Woman sticking her tongue out of her mouth, with the end of the tongue rolled to form a clover shape. The tongue, a complex muscular organ used for taste, chewing, swallowing and speech, can be rolled several different ways. The type of tongue rolling ability is determined by genetics. This individual has a genetic makeup that allows them to form this shape with their tongue, a trait found in less than ten percent of the population. For the rarer inverted tongue roll, and the more common upwards tongue roll, see images P474/021 and P474/022.
