Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the upper surface of a cat's tongue, showing a profile view of the numerous, claw-like papillae that give the tongue a rough, rasp-like texture. The papillae are directed towards the back of the mouth. The rough texture of the tongue is utilised for penetrating the animal's coat during grooming, and for drinking water. Magnification: X 17 at at 35mm size. Original is BW print p475/024.
