Caption: Light micrograph of a section through a single human taste bud, showing some of the spindle- shaped cells stretched across it from top to bottom. Up to thirty of these cells may be present. Nerve connections indicate that only some cells are taste receptors and that the remainder are involved in a supporting role. Despite recognition of the four basic elements of taste (sweet, bitter, acid and salt), which appear to be located in different regions of the tongue, different types of taste bud have so far not been differentiated. Magnification: x400 at 45mm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 2.17, page 23 (B/W reproduction).
