Caption: Milk teeth. Coloured X-ray of a permanent tooth (green) erupting under a child's milk teeth. Milk teeth (or deciduous teeth) first appear at about six months of age. They are gradually replaced by permanent teeth at around age six. The roots of the milk tooth are first reabsorbed, causing the tooth to become loose and fall out. The permanent tooth then emerges in its place several weeks later.
