Caption: Tooth. Illustration of a cross-section through a healthy human tooth. The tooth consists of enamel (white, at upper centre) covering the dentine (yellow) and the pulp (orange) with its nerve fibres (yellow) and blood vessels (blue & red). The gums (pink, at centre left and right) and cementum (brown) help to keep the two tooth roots firmly in place in the jawbone (yellow, at lower left, right and centre). Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body, protecting teeth from the wear resulting from chewing food. There are 32 permanent teeth in an adult's mouth.
