Caption: Adenoids. Illustration of a cross-section through the lower head showing the adenoids (pharyngeal tonsil). The adenoids (blue, at centre left) are found at the back of the nasal cavity above the uvula (vertical orange structure). The tongue (at lower centre) fills most of the mouth cavity. Above the nasal cavity are two of the sinuses (red): the sphenoid sinus (above the adenoids) and the frontal sinus (above the nose). The adenoids are made up of lymph nodes, tissues containing white blood cells that help fight against infection. They enlarge during early childhood when respiratory infections are common, but usually disappear by puberty.
