Caption: Epiglottis. Endoscope view of a healthy epiglottis (lower right). This is a flap of cartilage, situated behind the tongue (pink, lower left), that covers the entrance to the larynx (voice box) during swallowing. This ensures that food and saliva enter the oesophagus (gullet) rather than passing down the trachea (windpipe) towards the lungs.
