Caption: Vocal cords. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of the vocal cords (V-shaped, centre) in the larynx of the throat. The cords help to produce speech by vibrating and tightening as air passes through them. Their name is slightly misleading, however, as the majority of sound production in speech is carried out by the tongue and lips. CT scanning uses a computer to build up images of the body from a sequence of X-ray scans.
