Caption: Tensed vocal cords. Endoscope view of the inside of a larynx (voicebox), showing the human vocal cords in the phonation (sound-producing) position. In this position the vocal cords are tensed, causing air passing backwards and forwards to resonate to produce vocal sounds such as singing and speech. The larynx is the lower part of the throat. The vocal cords are relaxed during normal breathing (see P496/029). An endoscope is a tube, with a camera on its tip, used to examine the inside of the body.
