Caption: Digestive system. Computer graphic illustrating components of the human digestive system. At top is part of the oesophagus, a muscular tube which leads from the mouth to the stomach. The stomach (kidney-shaped) receives ingested food and begins digestion with chemical enzymes and by mechanical action. Food passes from the glandular sac of the stomach through the C-shaped tube of the duodenum (centre left). In the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, further chemical breakdown occurs and stomach acid is neutralised. The small intestine (lower frame) is the principal site for the absorption of digested food; in humans it reaches some 6.5 metres in length.
