Caption: Digestive system. Artwork of the outline of a man showing the human digestive system. The digestive system breaks down food, absorbs the nutrients and excretes the rest. Swallowing food passes it down the oesophagus into the stomach (at centre right) where gastric juices and muscular contractions help to break it down. Then the food moves out into the duodenum (at lower end of stomach) and the small intestine (at bottom centre) where most nutrient absorption occurs. The large intestine (around small intestine) absorbs water and minerals, converting undigested food to faeces. The liver (to left of stomach) regulates the levels of most of the main chemicals in the blood.
