Caption: Digestive system. Illustration showing the human digestive system on a silhouette of a human fig- ure. Food enters the stomach (blue, upper right) through the oesophagus. The stomach stores and churns up food ready for digestion in the small intestine (red). As food passes into the small in- testine, bile from the liver (triangular, centre), which is stored and concentrated in the gall- bladder (pear-shaped, behind liver), is released to aid the breakdown of fats. After digestion, food residue passes into the large intestine or colon (grey, around small intestine), a wide tract in which excess water is absorbed. Faeces are finally expelled through the anus (lower centre).
