Digestive system. Illustration showing the human digestive system on a female figure. Food enters the stomach (red, upper right) through the oesophagus. The stomach stores and churns up food ready for digestion in the small intestine (pale grey). As food passes into the small intestine, bile from the liver (red, upper left) is released to aid the breakdown of fats. After digestion, food residues pass into the large intestine or colon (orange), a wide tract in which excess water is absorbed. Here it is seen forming a square shape around the coiled small intestine. Faeces are finally expelled through the anus (lower centre).
