Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the epithelium of the stomach (gastric) mucosa. This surface epithelium of simple columnar cells secretes mucous, which protects the stomach lining from digestive acids & processes acting upon food in the stomach. The boundaries between these cells are strengthened against mechanical and chemical damage. The gastric wall is thrown into folds (not seen here) as downgrowths of this epithelium, forming pits of glands. Other epithelial cells within gland pits, are specialized to secrete hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes and hormones. Magnification: x4,125 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x6,600 at 4x5 inch size.
