Caption: Stomach. Illustration showing the stomach and the oesophagus (both red), on a female figure. A bolus of chewed food enters the oesophagus when swallowed. This muscular tube then contracts in a wave-like motion known as peristalsis. This passes the bolus down into a muscular sac, the stomach. The stomach stores and churns up food, beginning to break it down for digestion. Hydrochloric acid, mucus and some digestive enzymes are secreted in the stomach. From here, the food is passed down into the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum, and the process of absorbing the nutrients begins. The liver (grey) is seen at lower centre.
