Caption: Endoscope image showing the normal appearance of part of the interior (lumen) of the human small intestine. The circular folds visible along the length of this section are less numerous than in the duodenum, the uppermost section of the small intestine. The circular folds may be caused to disappear by gentle inflation with air, pumped down the endoscope. Air insufflation may reveal the fine pattern of blood vessels within the mucous membrane, but its use is minimised because of patient discomfort.
