Caption: Small intestine. Coloured X-ray of a healthy human small intestine. The small intestine (green) consists of the duodenum, the ileum and the jejunum and is a coiled digestive tube that is 6.5 metres long. It joins the stomach at one end and the large intestine (colon) at the other. The small intestine is where most digestion and absorption of food occurs. The spine is down the centre and the pelvis is at lower frame. The patient was given a barium meal containing the X- ray opaque barium sulphate. This has made the stomach (blue, at upper right) stand out on the X- ray as it has the highest barium concentration.
