The cytoplasm of a hepatocyte is crowded with organelles; the density relects its numerous metabolic activities. These include the detoxification of waste products, the reclamation of old red blood cells, the sythesis and secretion of bile, blood plasma proteins and the storage of glycogen. Organelles visible include the rough endoplasmic reticulum (red) studded with ribosomes (blue, sites of protein synthesis). Various mitochondria, the sites of chemical energy synthesis, appear orange & kidney shaped.
