Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of various cell types comprising an islet of Langerhans, the endocrine component of the human pancreas. Beta cells secreting insulin appear green & orange; alpha cells secreting glucagon are coloured dark brown at right. The hormones insulin & glucagon are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Insulin promotes the uptake of glucose by most cells, whilst (generally) glucagon counteracts the effects of insulin. Magnification: x17,500 at 6x7cm size, x7,800 at 35mm size.
