False-colour arteriogram (angiogram) of blood vessels in the human kidney. As the organs that filter nitrogenous waste products from the blood, the kidneys are well supplied with blood vessels. Renal arteries transport blood to the kidneys, and form branches (blue) in the central region of the medulla. Towards the outer cortex region, these blood vessels branch into a fine network as they interact with the kidney's filtering process. Cleansed blood then passes from this capillary network into small veins (not seen) which join to form a larger renal vein. Arteriography is the X- ray examination of an artery that has been injected with a radio-opaque contrast medium.
