Caption: Healthy kidneys. Coloured Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scan of a patient's kidneys in posterior view. The bean-shaped kidneys are colour-coded: yellow represents high uptake of a radioactive substance; red shows lower activity. Highest activity is in the central medulla of each kidney where a radioactive substance has been filtered from the blood and concentrated in urine. The kidneys produce urine and also secrete several hormones. In SPECT scanning a gamma camera is used to detect a radioactive substance injected into the blood and concentrated in a body organ. The organ can be viewed in cross-sectional "slices".
