Caption: Large intestine. Coloured gas contrast X-ray of a healthy human large intestine (colon, yellow & black) which has 3 regions. At left is the caecum & the ascending colon. The transverse colon passes from left to right along the top of the image. Part of the descending colon (right) & the sigmoid colon (lower centre & lower right) are also seen. Faeces passes from the sigmoid colon into the rectum (bottom centre) before excretion. The colon absorbs water & electrolytes from digested food. The gas contrast technique uses the fact that gases are more transparent to X-rays than tissue. Typically, air, oxygen or carbon dioxide are injected into the colon.
