Caption: Large intestine lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucosal lining of the colon, part of the large intestine. The mucous membrane that lines the colon is highly folded, providing a large surface area for absorption by absorptive cells. These cells remove water and any remaining nutrients from the already digested food. The mucosa also contains goblet cells. These produce mucus, which acts as a lubricant and assists the movement of faeces, protecting the wall of the colon from mechanical damage. Magnification unknown.
