Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a section of lung tissue exhibiting an increased infiltration of macrophages, probably due to the presence of bacterial infection or cancer. Three of the rough- coated, spherical macrophages can be seen in the alveolus (air sac) in the centre of the image. Macrophages are large, phagocytic scavenger cells which attack and engulf bacteria, tumour cells and other foreign bodies. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
