Light micrograph of normal human ovary, showing part of an active follicle. The ovum appears as the large circular pink structure encased within a conical mass of cells, the cumulus oophorus. The empty space above and right is the interior of the follicle. The clear pink band to the bottom of the picture represents the separation of the cumulus oophorus from the follicle wall (the theca interna along bottom of picture). This separation accompanies the release of the ovum from the follicle en route to the fallopian tubes. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
