Caption: Placenta. Light micrograph of a section through the placenta of a pregnant woman, showing the numerous chorionic villi (purple). The villi are folds of the chorion, the outer membrane that surrounds a developing foetus. The chorion forms the foetal part of the placenta, the organ that connects a foetus to its mother during pregnancy. Each villus is packed with blood vessels, allowing the blood supplies of the foetus and its mother to come into close proximity. The villi provide an extensive surface area for the exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste products between the blood supplies. Haematoxylin and eosin stain. Magnification unknown.
