Caption: Female reproductive system, vertical section, artwork. At top left and right arepart of the two fallopian tubes, or oviducts. Every month an egg travels from an ovary (not seen) to the uterus (womb, centre) along a fallopian tube. The uterus is a pear- shaped hollow muscular organ in which the fertilised egg implants and develops. At the base of the uterus is the cervix, which opens into the vagina, the muscular birth canal.
