Caption: Cervical mucus. Light micrograph of cervical mucus around the period of ovulation. The mucus has crystallised to form a 'fern leaf' pattern. Around the time of ovulation (when an egg is released from an ovary) the cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, which makes it easier for sperm to swim through.
