Caption: False-solour transmission electron micrograph of a human sperm. The spermatozoon displays its entire head, neck & tail. The green head contains a nucleus housing the 23 chromosomes of the male gamete. The head is capped by the acrosome, containing enzymes to penetrate the egg during fertilisation. Pink mitochondria in the upper tail are sites of energy production; they are arranged alongside 9 outer bundles of fibres & a central flagellum which form the core of the tail - the sperm's propulsion unit. Magnification: x2860 at 35mm size, x5720 at 6x7cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 2.5, page 16.
