Caption: Primordial female egg cells. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a primordial germ cell undergoing mitotic cell division in the ovary of a seven week old embryo. At this stage primordial germ cells, also known as oogonia, migrate into the ovarian cortex where they multiply by mitosis. By the fourth and fifth months of fetal development the primordial germ cells number about seven million but of these only 1 million will be present at birth. By this stage they have become primordial follicles and will represent the patrimony of eggs in the woman's ovary. Magnification: x1920 at 6x7cm size.
