Sea urchin egg. Light micrograph of a sea urchin (class: Echinoidea) egg, or ovum. This is the female sex cell. It has a jelly-like coating, made up of sugars, that only allows sperm from the same species of sea urchin to fertilise it. Sea urchins release millions of eggs, through gonopores, into the ocean each breeding season. Magnification: x280 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
