Caption: Chromosomes. Computer-enhanced light micrograph of human chromosomes. Chromosomes are thread-like structures in the cell nucleus that carry genetic information in the form of genes. Each chromosome consists of two strands (chromatids) joined in a region known as the centromere or kinetochore. Chromosomes can construct exact copies of them- selves while a cell is resting between successive divisions. When chromosome division occurs, the centromere splits longitudinally. The nucleus of every human cell contains 46 chromosomes, 23 of maternal and 23 of paternal origin. Three chromosomes are seen in this micrograph. Magnification: x5000 at 6x7cm size.
