Male chromosomes. Coloured artwork based on a light micrograph of a male set of chromosomes (the karyotype). The male sex chromosomes are highlighted bright yellow (centre left), with the larger X chromosome below the small Y chromosome. Chromosomes contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) which is responsible for passing genetic information from parents to their offspring. Humans have 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. In the female set, the sex chromosomes are a matching pair of X types, while in the male set, there is an X and a Y. The genetic information on the Y chromosome is responsible for the development of masculine characteristics.
