Human chromosomes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human chromosomes. Each chromosome consists of two identical chromatids joined at a centromere. Chromosomes are only seen like this during cell division. They are found in every cell nucleus and consist of genetic material, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), in association with proteins. Most human cells contain 46 chromosomes, with 23 inherited from the mother and 23 from the father. Magnification: x6050 at 6x7cm size.
