Caption: The Cosmotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, was the first proton sychrotron to come into operation, in 1952. The protons were first accelerated to 3 MeV in a Van de Graaf generator & then injected into the "doughnut" of the main accelerator, seen through the control room window, where they were raised to an energy of 3 GeV. The Cosmotron ceased operations in 1966.
