Caption: Giant chromosomes. Coloured high resolution scanning electron micrograph of giant (polytene) chromosomes in a fruit fly salivary gland cell nucleus. Chromosomes are thread-like structures present in the nucleus of all plant and animal cells. They contain the sequences of genes which govern inherited characteristics. The giant chromosomes (green) of the fruit fly (Drosophila) have been enlarged by repeated replications (polyteny). Surrounding the chromosomes is the double nuclear membrane (purple). On it can be seen the nuclear pores (small black holes).
