Caption: Mitosis. Image 2 of 8. Light micrograph of a hyacinth root cell during prophase, the first stage of mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. During prophase the chromosomes, which contain two identical chromatids and are made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, red), condense into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter cells.
