This image is part of the sequence Flowers: cell division (mitosis) in a hyacinth root

Credit: HERVE CONGE, ISM/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Cytokinesis. Image 8 of 8. Light micrograph of a hyacinth root cell during cytokinesis (cellular division). Cytokinesis occurs after mitosis (nuclear division), the formation of two daughter nuclei (red) from one parent nucleus. During cytokinesis a new cell wall (thin pale line) is laid down between the nuclei. Material for the cell wall is carried in vesicles guided by microtubules, part of the cell's cytoskeleton. Magnification: x1150 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. For images showing the cell cycle see P672/146-P672/153.
