This image is part of the sequence Animals: cell division (mitosis) in a whitefish cell

Credit: MICHAEL ABBEY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Interphase stage of mitosis. (Image 13 of 13). Light micrograph (LM) of a whitefish cell (Coregonus sp.) in the stage between two successive cell divisions. This is called the interphase. The interphase makes up 90% of a normal cellular cycle. During this stage, the cell may seem dormant but is biochemically active. The synthesis of genetic material and organelles occurs during this stage. For a sequence showing mitosis, see images P673/069-081.
