Foetus in womb. Artwork of an 8 month old foetus in the uterus of its mother. It is seen in an upside down position, with its head pointing towards her pelvis. At this age the foetus will measure around 30 centimetres (crown-rump length) and weigh approximately 1000 grams. Its head engages (drops down low into the pelvis) during the 36th week in a first pregnancy, but not until a few weeks later in subsequent pregnancies. The foetus assumes this position in readiness for birth, when the head enters the birth canal followed by the rest of the body. Occasionally the foetus fails to engage and is born feet first.
