Caption: Light micrograph showing a mixed spicule consisting of darkly stained bone tissue containing osteoblasts and an inner core of lightly stained calcified cartilage. The left side of the spicule exhibits two osteoclasts. The right side of the spicule is a growing surface in which osteoblasts seen at the surface of the bone spicule are laying down bone matrix. Within the bone matrix, several osteocytes are visible. Another mixed spicule is seen in the lower right corner with an osteoclast in apposition to the top of the spicule. Mallory-Azan stain.
