Caption: Dandruff flake. Light micrograph of a human dandruff flake. Dandruff is the name for the dead skin cells shed by the scalp. The condition is harmless, but may cause embarrassment and irritation. The condition may become markedly worse if a person is suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis, a skin disorder which causes itching and flaking. The application of special shampoos may reduce the dandruff production, and creams containing corticosteroid drugs may be applied to the scalp to ease the symptoms. Treatment for dandruff is usually continuous. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
