Caption: Light micrograph of a section through the human scalp showing a hair follicle. The round follicles from which the hair shaft grows are surrounded by fat lobules. Each hair follicle is surrounded by the broad external root sheath (red) which is separated from the connective tissue sheath, the light orange region on the outer perimeter, by the glassy membrane. The internal root sheath (yellow) surrounds the cuticle, which lies just around the dark central cortex. The cuticle consists of overlapping keratin plates, an arrangement which is said to prevent the matting of the hair. This hair is brown, coloured by melanin from cells in the root.
