Light micrograph of a plan section through the human scalp, showing numerous circular hair follicles. The staining method distinguishes between epithelial and connective tissue elements, colouring them red and green respectively. Each hair follicle is a tube consisting of five concentric layers of epithelial cells. As they rise towards the scalp surface, the three inner layers undergo keratinisation to form a hair shaft, whilst the outer layers form an epithelial sheath. A glassy membrane (dense green) binds each follicle & separates it from surrounding connective tissue. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size.
