Caption: Surface of human hair. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a shaft of human hair, showing its surface. The hair shaft is divided into three concentric sheaths called the medulla, cortex and cuticle. The cuticle is the external surface layer seen here, made up of flat keratin scales which overlap each other. This overlapping arrangement of keratin scales is said to prevent the hair from matting. Magnification: x350 at 6x4.5cm size.
