Caption: Split hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of a human hair suffering from a damaged, frayed end. This condition is known as "split ends" or trichoschisis. Split ends are caused by mechanical damage due to brushing, blow-drying and hair clips, and it also occurs at the end of long hair because of its age. Careful treatment and the use of nourishing shampoos and conditioners may help to prevent split ends. Magnification unknown.
